The history of mills in Mumbai, various aspects related to it will be seen through the Textile Museum of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). More than 90 percent of the first phase of the project has been completed in the seven thousand square metre area. The museum stands on the site of The India United Mill No-2 and 3 at Kalachowki in Byculla.


The museum has other attractions including a multimedia musical fountain 3D show. A tender has been floated for the cleaning of the pond in the mill and other works for the fountain show, and this work will also start soon. The first phase will be started after Ganeshotsav i.e. in October or November, informed the senior officials of the municipality.


The decision to set up this museum was taken in 2011. For this, 44 thousand square metres of space will be required, out of which the last 10 thousand square metres of space will be provided to the municipality by the National Textile Corporation. It is in process. This museum will be built in two phases. In the first phase mainly the fountain show will be a special attraction for the tourists. This will show the history of mills and other tourism in Mumbai. In the first phase, parking will be provided to the tourists coming to the museum within the mill premises.

The second phase of the museum will be completed leisurely. It is proposed to conserve the ancient architecture by making internal changes for library, auditorium, art exhibition etc. while setting up a museum of mills in 34 thousand square metres out of 44 square metres. However, the municipality has not yet received 10,000 square metres of land. It was said that the process is ongoing.


Decision on ticket price soon
Attractive entrance, open space for visitors, seats, attractive lighting, food court etc. facilities will be available in the museum for the tourists. The work of its ticket window has been completed and the decision on the ticket rates for adults and children visiting the museum will be taken soon at the administrative level of the municipality.
