Maharashtra is developing a new parking policy to address space issues in cities. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced this at the groundbreaking ceremony of the state transport department’s new headquarters in Worli.

As per the new parking policy, the government will first map all parking areas and then build an app for drivers to find and book parking spots. The new parking policy was announced on December 30, 2024, as part of the government’s 100-day transformation drive.

The transport department earlier suggested that car buyers should show a "certified parking area" certificate during purchase. After Fadnavis' announcement, officials confirmed that using the planned app to book a parking spot could also be accepted as proof. However, they clarified that these ideas are still in the early stages.

Mumbai has many public parking spaces, but some remain unused. The government wants to make sure that these spots are used. Once the mapping and app development are complete, authorities will focus on enforcing parking rules. The app will allow drivers without private parking to rent public spaces.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is already working on a project called the "Automatic Parking Guidance and Management System." This includes a digital payment system. The civic body has identified over 3,000 parking spots and aims to digitise the entire process. A central agency will manage the system and provide real-time updates on parking availability.

The system will reduce traffic congestion, especially during peak hours. It will also help drivers save time and fuel by allowing them to book parking in advance instead of searching for spaces on the road.

State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has also talked about the need for a strong parking policy. The issue will also be discussed in the upcoming state assembly session. The transport department studied parking policies in cities like Singapore, London, Tokyo, New York, and Zurich while developing the plan.
