Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Transport (NMMT) has launched an online smart card scheme for senior citizens. With this, they can apply for free bus travel passes digitally.
The initiative, which is announced by NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailash Shinde on the occasion of NMMC’s 29th anniversary, aims to simplify the application process for senior citizens.
Earlier, senior citizens had to visit the nearest NMMT Pass Centre or Turbhe Depot to submit documents and get their smart cards. With this new online facility available on the NMMT Bus Tracker app, they can now complete the entire process from home.
To apply, senior citizens will have to fill an online form. Upload the required documents and pay a fee of INR 50. After that, the smart card will be sent by post.
"We don't get time to go to the depot to get our cards as we work as watchmen in the society. This is really a good initiative for people like us. Making it available through the app will now make it convenient. I travel from Ulwe to Nerul every day for work and now I can travel for free using NMMT," said 62-year-old watchman Manohar Shinde.
