The Pune district administration and forest department have decided to ban entry to Bhimashankar and Tamhini sanctuaries during peak monsoon.

This development comes soon after a family was washed off by the heavy flow of waterfalls at the Mulshi dam in Lonavala. Additionally, this decision aims to mitigate risks, especially during the rainy season when the danger is heightened.

Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Tushar Chavan said that considering the safety of tourists, the department has decided to close all the scenic routes of the Century from July 1 to September 30.

During monsoon, several tourists and trekkers visit Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary and Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary as they are among popular sites. However, the unpredictable water flow and slippery paths pose significant risks.

The official have also informed that those who do not comply with these restrictions will face action under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

There are six waterfalls in Bhimashakar and all the connecting routes and trails are closed to visitors. These include Kondhwal Waterfall, Chondi - Khopiwali Waterfall, Nhani Waterfall near Padarwadi, Subhedar Waterfall near Nariwali, Ghongal Ghat Nala - Khandas - Bhimashankar route and Shidi ghat - Padarwadi - Kathewadi route.
