The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified its campaign to remove abandoned and damaged vehicles from the roads of Mumbai. As per reports, commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has directed civic officials to take strict action and clear the streets of cars that are no longer in use.

On Wednesday, June 18, a review meeting was held at the civic offices to assess the progress of the operation. The drive, which began last month, has been scaled up. The BMC is now working closely with the police department to carry out the task more efficiently.

Private agencies have been hired to locate and remove such vehicles from the roads. These vehicles have been causing traffic jams and posing safety risks. Tenders have also been issued to select companies to help with the drive.

The BMC has started notifying the owners of the vehicles before towing them away. If vehicles are not claimed or removed, they will be dismantled.

The areas most affected by abandoned cars are Dahisar, Borivali, and Andheri. These neighbourhoods have seen a higher number of such vehicles parked along the roadsides. The initiative will reduce congestion and make roads safer for both drivers and pedestrians in those areas.

The operation is being carried out with the involvement of several key officials, including Joint Commissioner of Police Anil Kumbhare and Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar. The proceeds from the dismantling and scrapping of these vehicles will be used to support local development and civic projects.
