State Begins Selection for Chief Information Commissioner After 20-Month Delay

The state government, which has been keeping the posts of Chief Information Commissioner and other Information Commissioners vacant for the last 20 months, finally started the process of selection of Information Commissioners on Tuesday, after facing criticism from all around. A search committee headed by retired Justice Sunil Shukre has been formed to find a suitable candidate for the post of Chief Information Commissioner, as per the report by Loksatta. 


Since April 2023, the post of Chief Information Commissioner, who is responsible for effective implementation of the Right to Information Act, is responsible for controlling seven Divisional Information Commissioners of the Commission namely Mumbai, Konkan, Pune, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Nagpur and Amravati. Presently Mumbai Information Commissioner Pradeep Vyas is holding the additional charge of Chief Information Commissioner.

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Nagpur, Amravati Information Commissioner posts are vacant. All the four Information Commissioners have the responsibility of two posts. As a result, these commissioners have to do a lot of work while handling the responsibility of two departments. Meanwhile, the former Information Commissioner, many people in the Right to Information movement expressed their displeasure and appealed to the court in this matter.


Sujata Saunik on the committee

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has appointed retired High Court judge Shukre as the chairman of the search committee to search for suitable candidates for the post of Chief and Divisional Information Commissioner. Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik and the Upper Chief Secretary General Administration Department have been appointed as members of this committee.
