The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which recently announced the redevelopment of Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in Ghatkopar, has now invited tenders for the appointment of architects and project management consultants. The closing date for tenders is June 18.
Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar, spread across 75 acres along the Eastern Expressway, is one of the largest slums in the eastern suburbs. Along with the slum of Kamraj Nagar, Ghatkopar has almost half the population of East. It will be developed under Regulation 33 (10) of the Development Control and Promotion Regulations, 2034. Once developed, MMRDA will be able to extend the Eastern Freeway from Mankhurd to Thane, Ghatkopar.
Although the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) and MMRDA signed a redevelopment agreement in March, the tender for an architect was delayed due to the pre-election model code of conduct. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde approved this project in December 2023. MMRDA is expected to complete within three years from the date of transfer of land by SRA.
