The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has resumed the redevelopment of Topiwala Market in Goregaon after a seven-year delay. The civic body plans to complete the project by March 2027.

The original structure housed a civic market and a theatre, but it was demolished in 2018. Now, it will be replaced by a 16-storey building named after Anant Shivaji Desai, also known as "Topiwala" for his cap trade.

Construction work initially began in 2019 but was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project was restarted after new tenders were released last year. Work on the site officially restarted in October 2024.

During an inspection on Thursday, BMC Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani asked officials to expedite the construction process. He asked for focus on completing the ground and first floors in the first phase.

These two floors will accommodate 206 shops, with 112 shops on the ground floor and 94 on the first floor. Vendors will be able to begin operations once this phase is completed.

The entire building is estimated to cost INR 172 crore. In addition to the market space, it will feature parking areas, an 800-seat auditorium, and residential floors. As per reports, the raft foundation for the structure has already been completed.

Earlier, vendors from the old market had also raised concerns about delays and requested additional space in the renovated building. All of these issues will also be solved in the current construction.
