It has been raining heavily in Mumbai and surrounding areas in the month of July. Increased rainfall has led to a significant increase in water storage in the lakes and dams that supply water to Mumbai. In May, water levels in most of the lakes that supply water to Mumbai had reached extremely low levels.

Water storage more than 50 percent

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had decided to cut water supply by 10 per cent in the city and suburbs. Even after the rains started, water shortage continued. However, now due to heavy rains the water storage in the reservoirs supplying water to Mumbai has crossed 50 per cent level. Therefore, water cuts in Mumbai are likely to be cancelled soon.

Water storage increased in lakes

Mumbai was supplied with water from seven reservoirs namely Vaitarna, Madhya Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulsi. Due to heavy rains in the month of July, the water storage in all these lakes has increased significantly. A few days ago, Tulsi and Powai lakes were filled to the brim.

Last week it started raining continuously in Mumbai. Therefore, at present 53.12 percent water has been accumulated in the seven reservoirs of Mumbai. This water will be enough for Mumbai for the next 200 days. If heavy rains continue for the next few days, this water storage may increase further.
