Mumbai Police have launched an investigation into two vehicles, which have same license plates, found parked near the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Colaba. The cars were discovered on Monday evening, January 6. Their drivers were taken to the Colaba police station for questioning.
The case came to light when Sakir Ali, a resident of Nariman Point, who owned an Ertiga with the license plate MH01 EE 2388, noticed another vehicle of the same model using his registration number.
Earlier, Ali had been receiving traffic tickets for violations in locations he had not visited. Later, Ali began monitoring vehicles and finally spotted the duplicate car near the hotel. He immediately informed the traffic police, who stopped the vehicle and detained its driver, Prasad Kadam, along with the car.
Both vehicles were taken to the Colaba police station. Police have recorded the drivers' statements and confirmed that Kadam used the fake plate intentionally.
Investigations revealed that Kadam, a resident of Seawoods in Navi Mumbai, had deliberately forged the license plate to avoid loan recovery agents. Kadam had purchased a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga with the original registration number MH01 EE 2383 but had fallen behind on loan payments of over INR 2 lakh. However, he continued driving with the fake plate.
A formal complaint has been registered under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) and are investigating Kadam. The shopkeeper who produced the forged plate is also under scrutiny, and legal action may be taken against them.
