A 32-year-old doctor from Panvel went missing after he allegedly jumped into the sea from the Atal Setu bridge minutes after calling his mother on Monday night, July 9.
The incident was reported to the Atal Setu control room at 9.43 pm by an unidentified caller, allegedly a passing motorist, who saw a man jumping from the bridge at an 11.8 km mark from Mumbai. It was also recorded on the CCTV.
Soon, the police registered a missing person’s report and launched a search operation for him.
The doctor, identified as Dr Omkar Bhagwan Kavitke, was a resident of Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai. He had been working at Sir J J Hospital in Mumbai for the past six years.
When personnel from Navi Mumbai’s Ulwe police station reached the spot, they found the car and an iPhone in it. By calling some numbers on the phone, they could identify the vehicle’s owner.
Upon checking the phone call details, it was found that he last called his mother at 9.11 pm to inform that he was coming home for dinner..
The police said Dr Kavitake had stopped his Honda Amaze car on the Navi Mumbai-Mumbai stretch of the sea link and crossed over the railing of the bridge.
