On Thursday, the Pune Rural police said 28-year-old Rahul Dattatraya Handore, the prime suspect in the murder of Darshana Pawar, allegedly killed her as she rejected his marriage proposal. Late on Wednesday, Handore was arrested at Mumbai’s Andheri railway station where he had confessed to the crime, the police said.

Recently, Darshana had qualified for the Maharashtra forest services and her body was found at Rajgad Fort in Pune, on Sunday. Her body bore multiple injuries and was found in a partially decomposed state. Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Ankit Goyal informed the media that the victim and accused knew each other from childhood. Along with this, when both of them were studying and were preparing for civil services, they were in touch in Pune. It appears that he committed murder because Darshana rejected his marriage proposal, he added.

Goyal also said that from circumstantial evidence and information given to them by various sources, Handore became the prime suspect, as fled from the spot and went incommunicado. The police were tracking his location and finally he was nabbed from Andheri railway station in Mumbai late night on Wednesday.

Darshana was the daughter of a driver at a sugar mill in Ahmednagar who had recently cleared the Maharashtra Public Service Commission exam for the post of Range Forest Officer (RFO). On June 9, she travelled to Pune to participate in a felicitation programme organised by a civil services coaching academy. Her speech at the event later went viral.

A detailed interrogation will reveal the real motive and sequence of events, informed the police.
