The Maharashtra Minority Welfare Department has announced the setting up of an Urdu Ghar in Solapur for the promotion of the culture and the language. This project will cost INR 9 crores, officials said. The state minority welfare department is headed by senior NCP leader Nawab Malik

This will be the sixth Urdu Ghar in the state including the ones in Nanded, Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Malegaon. As per an order passed the department on December 14, the Urdu Ghar in Solapur will be based on a 2,300 square metre plot offered by the Solapur Municipal Corporation. It will be constructed in the Mughal architectural style, as per officials familiar with the matter. 

“The Urdu Ghars are in various stages of completion. The architecture should be uniform, in keeping with Urdu culture,” a senior official said. 

On whether the site will be commercialized, the official said, “Guidelines of the state government are very clear, there is no scope for commercial use. The state government will provide grants for maintenance of the structure and staff salary.”

The official elaborated on the aim to promote the language and its culture. “We expect the Urdu Ghar to act as a link between Urdu and Marathi languages and cultures, between the two communities. The Urdu Ghar should emerge as a centre of activity for Marathi and Urdu authors and literary personalities. It will promote Urdu and Marathi literary activities throughout the year,” he said.

The Urdu Ghar will also promote activities put out by the Urdu Academy while organizing events for the promotion of Marathi and Urdu languages. They will also host authors and poets from both languages. The official said that this will be a new platform for scholars and researchers in the field.
