Out of 218 private unaided schools running without RTE approval under the Municipal Education Department of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a total of 192 schools have been given RTE approval. Also, out of the remaining 26 schools, 7 schools have been closed due to various reasons and the process of re-accreditation of 19 schools is underway through the education department of the municipality, School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar informed in the session.
As per the Right to Education Act, it is mandatory for every school to get RTE accreditation every three years. RTE approval is given to the school after checking the condition of the school building, adequate toilet facilities for students, fire prevention system and total number of students, various safety aspects. A few months ago, it was revealed that 218 private unaided schools were running without RTE approval within the limits of BMC.
It was observed that many schools have refused to accept RTE since 2016. Taking cognizance of repeated complaints in this regard, the School Education and Sports Department had ordered the Education Commissioner through a letter to look into the matter. MLAs raised a question about this in the session.
Meanwhile, there are more than 1 thousand schools under the jurisdiction of BMC. Also, since these schools have been in operation for the last 25 years and only because they are not approved by RTE, they do not become unauthorised. Schools have been given RTE approval by the municipality since earlier. The municipal officials had explained that the process of granting RTE approval to schools is extremely time-consuming.
