Amid rising cases of COVID-19, the District Collector of Maharashtra’s Thane on Monday, January 3, ordered to shut schools for students of classes 1 to 9 and class 11 till 31 January.

This order comes after Maharashtra witnessed unprecedented spike in the cases of Omicron variant. The students must note that the school for classes 10 and 12 will continue.

The state reported 12,160 fresh coronavirus cases on Monday, January 283 more than the previous day, and 11 new deaths, while the active tally crossed the 50,000 mark.

Meanwhile, on the same day, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also ordered closure of Mumbai schools for classes 1 to 9 till January 31.

In a major concern, 28 students between 6 to 15 years of age of an Ashram school in Bhiwandi’s Chimbipada tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, January 3. Of the total students, 23 are boys and five are girls. Apart from them, two staff members of the school also tested positive. With this, the total number of COVID-19 patients touched 30.

Moreover, on Day 1, Monday, January 3, of the COVID-19 vaccination drive for 15-18 year olds, Maharashtra administered 1,76,552 doses. While, in Mumbai a total of 6,115 youngsters got jabbed, public and private centres combined, according to the data.
