The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Mumbai has seen a big increase in the number of female students. The percentage has more than doubled compared to the previous year. This month, the institute welcomed its first class after getting IIM status. It saw 47.1% female students, compared to 21% last year.

Out of 518 students, 245 are female this year. In contrast, last year, 108 out of 497 students were female when it was still known as the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE).

The increase in female students is linked to efforts to promote gender diversity. The admissions requirements were also changed, allowing non-engineers to apply. Earlier, only engineers could pursue an MBA at the institute.

This year, 30% of the applicants were non-engineers. Out of the 518 admitted students, 152 are non-engineers. Among these non-engineers, 112 are women, and 40 are men.

Earlier, the institute used to offer three postgraduate diploma programmes, all of which required engineering degrees. These programmes were in sustainability management, industrial engineering, and industrial management.

After gaining the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) status, the institute offers MBA degrees in general management, operations and supply chain management, and sustainability and management.

Admissions are based on the Common Admission Test (CAT). The MBA (General) programme has the highest percentage of female students, with 177 out of 315 students being female. The MBA in Operations and Supply Chain Management has 55 students, and the MBA in Sustainability Management has 13 students.

For the first time, the institute held a two-week orientation. This was to accommodate the increased number of female students from various disciplines. The orientation included participation from overseas researchers and faculty members from other IIMs, in addition to IIM Mumbai’s professors.

In terms of gender diversity, IIM Kozhikode had a 50:50 student-to-faculty ratio in 2022. IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta had less than 30% female students. IIM Indore had 33% female enrollment in the same year.
