The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved only two out of 12 proposed new medical colleges in Maharashtra. One of which is a government college, whereas the other is private.

The government institution will be located on the shared campus of Gokuldas Tejpal (GT) and Cama hospitals in the Fort area. The second institution approved is the MGM Institute of Health Sciences, which is a private university in Nerul. Both colleges will offer 50 MBBS seats each.

The NMC informed about the result of the applications for 113 medical colleges in the nation for the 2024–2025 academic year on Saturday, July 6. Government college proposals in Jalna, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, Nashik, Amravati, Ambernath, and Hingoli were rejected due to non-compliance with NMC standards.

The Sriramchandra Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) in Aurangabad also did not receive approval. The NMC highlighted deficiencies at SIMS Aurangabad. The authority has given them about 2 weeks to follow the norms.

Meanwhile, two private colleges, Malati Medical College in Akola and Ideal Institute of Medical Science in Palghar, are still waiting for a response from the commission.

In the recent budget, the state government set aside about INR 97 crore for staffing and other facilities at the newly established hospitals and colleges.

NMC's inspections revealed that many colleges did not have enough staff, supplies, and infrastructure. The state has now requested specific details of these shortcomings from the commission. Reports suggest that the state would appeal to the NMC to review the rejected applications.
