The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has appealed to the citizens to plant trees in the area along the 'Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Underground Metro 3' route. The contractor will be entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining the trees planted by citizens for three years.
A large number of trees have been cut down in a 33.5 km area for the construction of the Metro 3 route. The slaughter of trees in Aarey Carshed has become a matter of great controversy. MMRC has decided to plant a large number of trees in the vicinity of the Metro 3 route as a compensation for the total destruction of trees along the Metro 3 route. MMRC has submitted an affidavit regarding tree plantation in the High Court.
Accordingly, tree plantation is being done in the metro station area. So now MMRC has appealed to citizens to plant trees too. MMRC has appealed to government, private offices, residential complexes, educational institutions, hospitals etc. establishments to come forward for tree plantation. MMRC will provide support for planting trees and trees for plantation. The MMRC contractor will be responsible for the maintenance of these trees for the next three years after planting.
Priority will be given to tree plantation in a 500 metres area around Metro 3 route. Applications have been invited from interested citizens, housing societies, and other organisations for tree plantation. MMRC will accept applications for this till 15th July. Importantly, a nodal officer has been appointed for this initiative. MMRC has appealed to the officials to get more information and participate in the tree plantation activities.
