While cases in Maharashtra are down significantly, state data shows that around 15,019 patients are still in a critical state and 5,215 of them are in intensive care units or ICUs. Additionally, up to 40,000 are receiving treatment from hospitals across the state.

Technical Advisor to the Maharashtra Government on COVID-19, Dr Subhash Salunkhe said that vaccinating up to 70 per cent of the adult population in Maharashtra by the end of August will be key to reducing the impact of a potential third wave.

“In order to achieve this, we need to make it obligatory for every shop owner, industrial establishments and small or big trader to get their employees inoculated before restarting their work. This strategy will also address the issue of vaccine hesitancy,” he added.
