Mumbai’s King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Parel is set to grow with 500 more beds, a modern lab, and a rooftop helipad. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced this in a major expansion plan.

Right now, KEM reportedly sees 6,000 outpatients every day and has 180 daily admissions. It performs over 70,000 procedures every year and is one of Mumbai’s busiest hospitals. In 2023, it had over 18.74 lakh outpatient visits and admitted more than 65,000 patients.

Once the new plan is complete, the hospital will have 2,750 beds. This will make it the largest civic-run hospital in the city. The new facilities will improve emergency and trauma care.

The Shatabdi Tower will be the main part of the plan. It will be an 18-story building. It will have advanced diagnostic machines, operating rooms, and special clinics. The helipad will be placed on the rooftop. It will help during disasters and mass emergencies like train accidents or building collapses. It will allow fast movement of patients.

The plan also focuses on hospital staff. A new 32-story nursing school and hostel will be built. It will have podium parking. A 21-story apartment building for staff is also under construction. It is located in the hospital’s orthopaedic section.

KEM Hospital has already started modernising. It now has a burns care unit. It has also launched a molecular diagnostics lab for faster testing for diseases like COVID-19 and tuberculosis.

The entire expansion is expected to be finished by June 2026.
