On Tuesday, August 2, Mumbai city saw the first fatality owing to a rain-related illness this monsoon because a Santacruz resident (49) man succumbed to leptospirosis. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) mentioned that its death review committee will determine the cause of the man's death, reported the Free Press Journal. 

Based on an account by Mid-Day, the deceased, Sunil Singh was admitted to the civic-run hospital VN Desai Hospital on July 18 for fever among other health ailments. He was reportedly taken to the ICU ward after his health deteriorated. He was then put on the ventilator. 

The narrative suggests that he breathed his last on Tuesday. The officials mentioned that his kidneys and liver failed because of leptospirosis. On the other hand, Mumbai registered 65 cases of leptospirosis in July. Of this, half were reported in the last week. 

This fatality is claimed to have come amidst the rise in cases of monsoon-related ailments comprising, including swine flu, dengue and leptospirosis.

On the other hand, Mumbai recorded around 340 cases of gastroenteritis in the first two weeks of July month. Further, Mumbai has reported 11 cases of leptospirosis between July 1-17. However, 33 cases of Dengue, Malaria (243), and 38 cases of Hepatitis have been reported. Officials have warned and urged citizens to take necessary precautions and not step out in water logging areas until an emergency as the cases of dengue and lepto will increase.
