A large amount of blood has been collected in recent blood donation camps conducted by some organisations in Mumbai. Only 20-25 percent of this blood will be used till the end of February. The State Blood Transfusion Council is faced with the challenge of maintaining around 50 thousand units of blood, as per the report by Loksatta.

Blood donation camps are organised on the occasion of birthdays of leaders, social events. A religious organisation collected 1 lakh 39 thousand units of blood in Mumbai between January 6 and 19. Drug Distributors' Association collected 80 thousand units of blood at a blood donation camp on January 25. Blood collection has also taken place in the camps of other small circles.

About 2 lakh 25 thousand units of blood have been made available in government and private blood banks. The state needs five thousand units of blood every day. Collected blood only lasts for 35 days. To avoid wasting excess blood, private blood banks sell it to blood banks in other states. But, as government blood banks cannot sell that blood, 20 to 25 percent, i.e. around 50,000 units of blood, is likely to be wasted. Experts are of the opinion that this problem will not arise if blood donation camps are organised with proper planning.

Fear of shortage in April

Once a person donates blood, that person cannot donate blood for the next three months. Due to the large volume of blood donations in January, these donors will no longer be able to donate until April. As a result, there will be shortage of blood in April and shortage of blood donors, said an official of the State Blood Transfusion Council.
