The renovation work of Phase 2, which includes two blocks, of the 154-year-old Crawford Market in Mumbai has been completed. Block 3 is designed for fish vendors, and Block 4 is for mutton traders. Both blocks are expected to become operational within 15 days.

The project is divided into two phases. Phase 1 restored the main market building. This included strengthening its structure and refurbishing interiors and exteriors. It also housed shops selling dry fruits, luggage, and a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) office. Phase 1 was completed in 2018.

The current plan includes the following blocks:

  • Block 1 will house the fruit market, kirana shops, and offices.
  • Block 2 is for the beef market.
  • Block 3 is for the fish market and other poultry-related vendors.
  • Block 4 will accommodate mutton traders.
  • A special shopping area is also part of the scheme.

Block 1 is under excavation, and landscaping is yet to be completed. The renovation involves complex challenges. The basement required excavation eleven meters deep into hard basalt rock.

The project is expected to cost INR 260 crore. About half of the funding has already been utilized. The entire project is expected to be finished by May 2025.

The ongoing reconstruction is led by conservation architect Abha Narain Lambah.

Here are the unique features:

1. The goal is to preserve the market’s historical essence while modernizing its facilities.

2. An acre of open space is one of the highlights of the renovation. This area will feature a pedestrian plaza, restored fountains, and an amphitheater.

3. Fish vendors from the nearby Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Market will relocate to Block 3. This block also includes spaces for poultry and egg vendors.

4. The design of the renovation was inspired by archival plans of the original market. Efforts were made to maintain the market’s historical layout and separate the meat and non-meat sections.

5. Underground parking for 150 cars, a service lift for goods, and a solid waste management system will be part of the new infrastructure.

6. The basement will also have a fish-cleaning treatment plant.

7. All vendors were relocated on-site during construction without disruption. Temporary transit camps were set up to accommodate vendors.

Crawford Market, officially named Mahatma Jotiba Phule Mandai, is an iconic structure in Mumbai. Its architecture blends Flemish, Norman, and Victorian Gothic styles. The original market was built in 1869 by Lockwood Kipling and designed by British architect William Emerson.
