In a significant development, a temporary walkway will be installed to connect the Metro 3 station with Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport for the convenience of air travellers and Mumbai Metro 3 commuters. The goal is to make an easy connectivity option between the two points.
Currently, it takes 15 minutes to reach the terminal from the metro station. This is because construction is still underway for the Metro 7A station, which is planned to connect the airport with Gundavali station. To resolve this issue, officials visited the Metro 3 station on Tuesday, November 26, to assess the feasibility of building a temporary walkway on-site.
The urban development department, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, Maha Mumbai Metro Operations Corporation, and Mumbai International Airport Limited participated in the visit.
The proposal includes building a steel bridge above the Metro 7A station. Field teams from different agencies will collaborate to complete the project. Once the Metro 7A station is completed in December 2025, a forecourt will connect the underground stations with T-2.
Earlier, a bus service was introduced on October 15 to address connectivity issues. However, it has seen low usage because passengers prefer not to wait for the buses. Low ridership shows that many airport travellers have not switched to public transport. Most metro users near the airport are employees working in airport services.
The temporary walkway is expected to make the travel between the metro station and T-2 terminal easier.
