The Naigaon BDD Chawl, which was previously renamed 'Sharad Pawar Nagar' during the Mahavikas Aghadi government's tenure, will now be known as 'Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar BDD Complex.' The Mahayuti government has decided to change the name, following demands from the local residents.
The redevelopment of BDD chawls at N M Joshi Marg, Naigaon, and Worli is progressing rapidly, under the supervision of the Mumbai board of MHADA. In the coming months, eligible residents will begin receiving possession of their homes in the newly rehabilitated buildings. The previous Mahavikas Aghadi government, led by Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad, had decided to rename N M Joshi Marg chawl as 'Rajiv Gandhi Nagar,' Naigaon chawl as 'Sharad Pawar Nagar,' and Worli BDD chawl as 'Balasaheb Thackeray Nagar.' However, this decision faced opposition from the local residents.
Locals had written to the state government opposing the name changes, but no action was taken at that time. Now, the Mahayuti government has accepted the residents' demands, leading to the renaming of Naigaon BDD Chawl to 'Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar BDD Complex.' The government recently issued an official decision confirming the change.
The demand to change the name from 'Sharad Pawar Nagar' to 'Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar BDD Complex' stems from the fact that Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar is revered in this area, with many of his followers residing in the chawl. The government's decision highlights this cultural significance.
Following this renaming, the locals are now pushing to change the name of N M Joshi Marg Chawl, currently known as 'Rajiv Gandhi Nagar.' A meeting of local residents will soon take place to formalize a written request to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde for this change. Locals prefer the chawls to be named after revered historical figures instead of political leaders, and this sentiment is expected to guide future demands.
