The Maharashtra government has decided to fast-track the Mumbai Metro 3 project to complete it by the end of December 2024. In a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, June 26, the state government earmarked INR 1,163 crore in funding for the Metro 3 project.
These funds will be directly allocated to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL) instead of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The overall cost of the corridor has been revised to INR 37,275.50 crore, down from the initial estimate of INR 23,000 crore.
The Metro 3 project comprises two sections. The first section, spanning from Aarey to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), is nearly 98% complete and is expected to open to the public in September. Earlier, it was slated to open in July, as per reports.
The second section, connecting BKC to Colaba, is slated for service by December 2024.
Delays in land acquisition, permit approvals, and the COVID-19 pandemic have contributed to the delay. Metro 3 will be an important line as it will link major economic hubs and educational institutions.
This underground metro corridor will link Aarey in the western suburbs to Colaba in South Bombay. It will provide much-needed connectivity and ease traffic in the city. The Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) recently completed the rolling stock trial of the Metro 3 Line.
