The land acquisition that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) needs for Metro 6 is not limited to the Kanjurmarg depot. In order to build stations and girders for this metro line that connects Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli, the planning department is having difficulty obtaining railway land larger than 3,000 square metres. The MMRDA is actually anticipating receiving approval from the forest department by July for a 1,798 square metre site.
The elevated metro line has undergone significant construction, but the MMRDA is still having trouble obtaining land at five points along the path. These places include, land close to IIT Bombay in Powai, Kanjurmarg, the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), Saki Vihar near Larsen & Toubro, and Jogeshwari (W), according to sources in the MMRDA.
An MMRDA official stated that all land acquisition discussions are at an advanced stage. The forest department is now processing the forest clearance for 1,798 square metres of private land at the intersection of the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) and EEH. After the process is finished, it is anticipated to receive clearance by July 2024.
MMRDA is aiming for 695 sq metres of private land at Jogeshwari West's Ghaswala Compound. The land acquisition process is in the completion stage in the collector's office. Apart from this, there are ongoing efforts to relocate high-tension (HT) power lines at Saki Vihar station, which is close to L&T.
Officials clarified that the procedure of obtaining an NOC from the civic body of Mumbai and other relevant authorities is ongoing in order to carry out the task of elevating HT lines. Resettlement and rehabilitation of impacted hutments in the vicinity are also being handled by the MMRDA.
While the remaining three entries and exits are already being built, MMRDA would need 346 square metres from MTNL to construct one entry/exit point at the IIT station on Metro 6. The Defence Ministry (navy) is expected to provide land of 248 square metres for the construction of Kanjurmarg station.
Another official from MMRDA said that the proposal is being reviewed at naval headquarters for final disposition and should be completed in a month.
In April 2023, the Maharashtra government released 15 hectares of land for the Kanjurmarg Depot building project for Metro-6. The seven extra hectares that MMRDA requested in May 2023 for linked activities are currently being considered. A contractor has already received approval from the planning agency to build the depot at an estimated cost of INR 509 crore. Building the boundary wall, filling in the earthwork, constructing the workshop, inspection bay, stabling lines, automatic washing plant, and creating an operations and control centre are all part of the work.
A proposal for the installation of girders over Central and Western Railway tracks has also been submitted by MMRDA. All piling work has reportedly been finished, and pile cap excavation is currently underway. It is anticipated that the final design permissions will be granted by October 2024, at which point the girders—for which mega blocks will be constructed—will be launched.
The 16-kilometre elevated line would cross the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, which links Vikhroli and Lokhandwala, and it will cross over the Central and Western Railway train tracks. For train operations on this route, a total of eighteen rakes, each with six cars, will be utilised.
