On April 8, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will energise a 5.6-kilometer segment, the phase 1, of Metro Line 2B between Mandale and Diamond Garden. This means that electricity will be delivered to overhead equipment (OHE), which is the system of cables that runs above the metro tracks and provides power to the trains.

An MMRDA official said that the first train has already been released following the completion of the MMRDA's energisation of the overhead electric cables at the Mandale depot's test track. One important phase is preparing for full operations and beginning trial runs. The Mandale to Diamond Garden portion is scheduled to be operational by the end of the year.

Mandale in the east and D N Nagar in the west will be connected by Metro Line 2B via Bandra, Kurla, and Chembur. It is part of Metro Line 2, which is a larger line, along with Line 2A. Once operational, the metro line would serve at least 10 lakh passengers every day, significantly decreasing traffic. The Mandale to Diamond Garden section will be given priority in the MMRDA's phased approach to this line. Similar to other Mumbai Metro lines, a 25kV AC overhead electric system would supply electricity to the route.

The Mandale depot is crucial for Line 2B. On a 31.4-hectare plot of government-owned land in Mandale, Mankhurd, it is now being built. The depot is double-decker to optimise capacity and can hold up to 72 Metro trains.

Future financing and clearances will determine if the remaining section of Line 2B, which connects Diamond Garden to D N Nagar, is completed. It is now in various stages of development.

Mumbai Metro Line 2B's construction is not going as expected. The contractors' negligence has caused a significant delay in the project's completion. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) penalised two contractors INR 1.29 crore for their negligence in building the Metro-2B route from Mandale in Mankhurd to Andheri West, DN Nagar. NCC Limited and J. Kumar are the contractors for the project. They were told to expedite the task, but neither of them did.

J. Kumar, in particular, has been hit with numerous fines for numerous metro projects since the authorities discovered numerous errors in his work.

Phase 1 structural and finishing work delays resulted in penalties. In 2019, NCC Limited was awarded a contract worth INR 458.93 crore to construct the first phase of the elevated metro line. Due to the project's failure to be completed within the allocated time, the contract was extended until June 2025. Despite the prolongation, the contractor was fined INR 1.07 crore for not accelerating the work.

J. Kumar, who oversaw the roofing and other structural work at five metro stations, was fined INR 21.97 lakh for similar delays.
