Three major flyovers on Ghodbunder Road at Patlipada, Manpada and Majiwada junctions will soon be temporarily closed for repair work, reports The Times of India. This is likely to cause inconvenience to passengers traveling to Mumbai suburbs, Gujarat, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, Pune and Thane.
Due to the road closure, outbound traffic, including heavy goods vehicles, has to be diverted to city-bound routes of highway, leading to congestion.
PWD plans to repair 3 flyovers
Ghodbunder Road currently has four operational flyovers at Waghbil, Patlipada, Manpada and Kapurbavdi-Majiwda junction. Repair work on the Waghbil flyover has already been completed, the report said.
The Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to repair 484 meters of Patlipada flyover, 380 meters of Manpada flyover and 250 meters of Kapurbavdi flyover. Putting on a new mastic layer is the main task to make the journey smooth during the rainy season. It is reported that a tender of INR 5.91 crore has been approved for this work.
The situation is particularly critical as Ghodbunder Road is the only alternative route connecting the Eastern and Western Expressways beyond Thane.
The route is heavily used by motorists, transport buses and goods vehicles traveling through the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). A few lanes on the Borivali-bound side have been disrupted due to the construction of the Metro.
The schedule of repairs has already been delayed due to the Lok Sabha elections and ongoing works at Gaymukh Ghat. PWD estimates that it will take a block of eight days to complete the work. To minimise inconvenience, they plan to carry out repairs mainly at night and may prefer the Patlipada flyover. The final schedule will be decided after discussion with the Thane Traffic Police.
According to reports, Thane traffic police officials are yet to receive a formal request for traffic blocks, to ensure minimum inconvenience to motorists.
