The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has unveiled a mobile application known as the MSRTC Commuters App to help commuters determine the live location of buses. The technology utilizes a VTS or Vehicle Tracking System which has been in use internally for the agency’s 18,000 buses.

But officials said that the VTS is only operational on buses in the Nashik Division and Mumbai-Pune routes. Other buses will be gradually activated in the next few days.

Yet another mobile app, known as MSRTC Mobile Reservation is currently under development. Both apps are designed to help commuters find live locations of buses running on the roads. The apps will also offer details on the nearest bus depot, bus stand, as well as routes. Commuters can also access a built-in SOS feature in case of emergencies. The MSRTC said that it is the first agency in the country to implement a project of this magnitude.

“Using the mobile application, passengers will now also know the actual arrival and departure time of ST buses. Similarly, screens have been set up at the bus stops to show the real time arrival and departure of buses for commuters who don’t have the mobile application. This will enable passengers to plan ahead and save time,” an MSRTC official said.

The MSRDC has also established a Central Control Room in Mumbai. This control room will have multiple screens to track the location of buses in real-time. Other metrics such as vehicle speed, arrival/departure times, are also accessible from this location.
