Western Railway (WR) has announced a significant initiative to improve working conditions for its train drivers, with a particular focus on the needs of female crew members. In response to ongoing concerns, WR has begun installing toilet facilities in locomotives. Currently, only six locomotives across three divisions—Ahmedabad, Mumbai Central, and Vadodara—are equipped with such facilities, but WR has secured approval to expand this to 80 more locomotives, with plans for an additional 460 under review.
Addressing Safety
The installation will occur in phases, with an initial focus on locomotives used for freight transport. Freight trains often make unscheduled stops in remote areas, creating challenges for drivers, especially women. Female drivers have expressed concerns about the lack of restroom facilities during long journeys. One driver shared that she had to restrict her water intake for hours to avoid using makeshift facilities along the tracks, a situation that becomes even more difficult during menstruation. Union leaders have backed the initiative, emphasizing that the installation of toilets is crucial for the safety and well-being of all crew members, particularly women. Freight trains frequently halt in isolated and potentially unsafe areas, posing risks to drivers who may need to find restroom facilities. Union representatives argue that improving these conditions is essential for promoting gender equality and inclusivity in the workplace. WR’s efforts reflect its commitment to creating a safer and more dignified environment for its employees.
Food Safety and Hygiene Protocols
In addition to improving crew working conditions, Western Railway has reiterated its commitment to providing passengers with high standards of food safety and hygiene. In collaboration with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), WR has implemented comprehensive measures to ensure that the food served on its trains meets stringent safety standards. WR officials have outlined several protocols aimed at ensuring food quality, including strict hygiene practices for food handlers, proper storage of raw materials, and maintaining high water quality during food preparation. The cleanliness of food packaging is also closely monitored. Regular inspections are conducted to prevent any potential contamination, ensuring that WR consistently delivers safe, hygienic meals to passengers during their journeys.
Passenger Welfare
Through these initiatives, Western Railway is demonstrating its commitment to both its passengers and employees. By addressing the critical need for toilet facilities in locomotives and maintaining the highest standards of food safety, WR continues to set benchmarks for creating a safer, more inclusive, and hygienic travel environment across its network.
