The Mumbai traffic police have commenced its door-to-door drive in an attempt to collect the pending traffic fines. During the past two weeks of the said drive, Rs 1 cr has been said to be collected. The officials are aiming to target the top 25000 individuals who cumulatively owe the Traffic Department Rs 120 cr.
The traffic police were compelled to start this drive because a large chunk of motorists were not paying their dues. To be able to collect the payments, the force was left with no other option, but to undertake the said regime. As part of this initiative, two constables equipped with body cameras will visit the motorists’ homes and ask for fine payments.
Since the introduction of the e-challan facility, the traffic police have been wrestling to get the offenders to pay the money. Before the e-challan regime, the fines were collected by the cops at the site of the traffic offence, however, now the challan directly goes to the offender virtually. This scenario has made the collection of dues an uphill task.
On the traffic police’s e-challan website, one can find a list of 180 traffic offences. The fine required to be paid by the offender depends on the violation undertaken that ranges between Rs 200- Rs 5000.
