The issue of removal of red soil from the Shivaji Park ground in Dadar has heated up due to heat and the Lok Sabha elections. Although the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started the removal of topsoil from the ground, it is progressing at a slow pace. Due to this, there is anger among the residents of the Shivaji Park area.

In the run-up to the elections, the residents have become aggressive on this issue and 'they will come to ask for votes, you ask them to remove the soil', the Shivaji Park organisation has appealed through social media. The problem of dust flying from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park grounds has persisted for many years. Two years ago, the division office of the BMC planted green grass to reduce the dust problem in the field.

Also many experiments like rainwater harvesting system, frost irrigation were also done. But after the transfer of officials and political interference, all these experiments remained incomplete. A large amount of soil was dumped on this ground to create a green lawn. But after the greenery experiment fails, the remaining soil blows away with the wind. Due to this, the problem of dust increases in winter and summer. Even now, the problem of dust has increased and the residents are demanding that the soil in the field be removed.

Limits on soil removal!

Ajit Kumar Ambhi, Assistant Commissioner of G North Division of the BMC said that the cleaning machine is being used to remove soil from the ground at night. Also citizens come to Shivaji Park till 10 am. But because of the summer vacations, cricket matches continue throughout the day. So there are limitations on this work.

Soil removal is slow

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board sent a notice to the civic body and directed it to remove the soil from the ground within 15 days. But actually, soil removal work has been going on since April 13 and only one truckload of soil is being removed per day. If the soil is removed at this rate, it will take two to three months, said Suhas Patwardhan, office bearer of Shivaji Park Residents' Association adding that they will not accept that.
