The All India Dhangar Samaj Mahasangh has been protesting for their identity at Azad Maidan for a month now. They want the State to include them in the Scheduled Tribe category. “There are people who are known as Dhangad and Dhangar. The hitch is that the State acknowledges Dhangad as ST and treats Dhangar as nobody when both are the same. Because of this small mistake, thousands of people who belong to the Dhangar society are suffering for almost 65 years. They are being denied reservation in jobs, financial aid and so with this protest, we want the State to acknowledge our plight and give us our identity” said Hemant Patil, leader, All India Dhangar Samaj Mahasangh. Hemant adds that Maharashtra has 1,50,00,000 of Dhangars. For the last 65 years, these people have been denied their fundamental rights.
