The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will get 10,228.69 square meters of land from Khatav Mill and this land will be used for housing of mill workers. 900 to 1000 new houses will be built from this land, informed Industries Minister Uday Samant.

There is a demand from mill workers that houses should be available in Mumbai itself and the houses available in Khatav Mill will provide some relief. Uday Samant replied to the point of view raised by Sachin Ahir in the Legislative Council.

As per the regulations applicable since 2019 regarding mill land in Mumbai (Section 58) and the new Development Control Regulations (Section 35), 13,500 houses have been constructed so far and land is being made available for the remaining houses.

Under the new Development Control Regulations (Section 35), the mill site is required to be divided into three parts, with one-third of the land reserved for the municipal corporation for gardens and playgrounds, one-third for mill workers' houses, and the remaining portion for the owners. He said that this rule is being implemented in Mumbai.

So houses will be given in Thane, Vasai-Virar. If one-third of the land has not yet been given by some mill owners, the process of acquiring it is underway. Samant informed that if space is not available for houses for mill workers in Mumbai, houses will be provided for the workers in Thane, Vasai-Virar, and other areas.

A large number of mill workers are waiting for houses. For this, frequent marches are being taken out. These workers expect to get houses in Mumbai itself.

MHADA has received applications from around two and a half lakh mill workers and their heirs for these houses. Of these, the government believes that it is possible to provide houses in Mumbai to only around 25,000 mill workers.

Since it is not possible to provide houses to the remaining 1.5 lakh workers in Mumbai, the state government has decided to provide houses to the workers outside Mumbai in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Accordingly, work has been started to build a total of 81,000 houses for mill workers in Shelu and Vangani villages, but the mill workers and the mill workers' union are opposed to the houses outside Mumbai.
