Kishori Pednekar, the Mayor of Mumbai, recently announced that there are 443 high-risk buildings in Mumbai. She also stated that a solution must be found to renovate or fix the problem areas as soon as possible.

Among the most dangerous buildings in Mumbai, Ghatkopar, Mulund and Bandra West have the highest number of 156 of these buildings. All private and municipal buildings in the city of Mumbai and the suburbs are surveyed before the monsoon. The number of buildings in dangerous conditions is then announced. However, as per reports, there are fewer dangerous buildings this year compared to last year. Two years ago, there were 619 high-risk buildings in Mumbai. Last year, the number was 499. Of these, more than 50 buildings have been demolished and will be redeveloped.

Pednekar held a meeting with the MHADA Building Repair Board Chairman Vinod Ghosalkar, Municipal Corporation and MHADA officials on Monday, July 20, to find out the status of these buildings in Mumbai and the suburbs. Kishori Pednekar, interacting with the media, stated that there are 443 C1 class high-risk buildings in Mumbai. Out of these, 56 are municipal buildings, 27 are government buildings and 360 are private buildings. All these buildings were reviewed at the meeting. Pednekar further stated that no matter who owns these buildings, concrete steps must be taken to vacate them now, adding that no one should shirk responsibility.

This comes after in an unprecedented incident. Last week, nine people succumbed to death when a part of the Bhanushali building in the Fort area of Mumbai collapsed. More than 20 people had to be evacuated from under the rubble. Many are undergoing treatment at hospitals. Meanwhile, two people were killed when a two-storey house collapsed at Malvani in Malad. Therefore, the meeting was called in the wake of the incidents to review the matter in hand.
