The progress of the Balasaheb Thackeray National Memorial in Dadar was recently reviewed by Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray and his son Aaditya Thackeray. The completion of the first phase of the memorial was announced, and it was confirmed that the second phase would be initiated soon. The project, designed as a unique underground structure on the seafront, has been scheduled for public opening in January 2026 to commemorate the centenary of Balasaheb Thackeray’s birth.

A state-of-the-art ‘double-wall flask’ design has been incorporated to address the challenges posed by its coastal location. The structure has been engineered with two walls separated by a four-foot gap to ensure safety against water intrusion. Protection against extreme weather events, including floods like those of July 26, 2005, has been prioritized. Rainwater management has been supported by the installation of an underground water system called the ‘Kund,’ which measures seven metres deep, 70 metres long, and five metres wide. It was explained by StudioStruct, the firm responsible for the structural design, that this system is capable of safeguarding the memorial even during prolonged heavy rainfall.

The memorial spans 40,000 square feet underground, with an additional 10,000 square feet within the heritage Mayor’s Bungalow. Space for an administrative block and cafeteria has also been allocated, covering 10,000 square feet. An underground design was chosen by architect Abha Narain Lambah to navigate the restrictions imposed by the site’s heritage status and its proximity to the seafront.

An emotional connection to the project was shared by Lambah, who highlighted the support provided by Balasaheb Thackeray to displaced Kashmiri Pandits, including her own family. Contributions made by him to preserve the dignity of the Marathi community were also acknowledged. In the second phase, a museum, library, photo gallery, and audio-visual exhibits showcasing Balasaheb’s life are expected to be included. The designs for this phase have been finalised, and construction is scheduled to begin shortly. The inauguration of the completed memorial has been planned for January 23, 2026.

Praise was extended to the project team by Uddhav Thackeray, who also noted the cooperation received from the Maharashtra government and the MMRDA. It was stated that all political leaders, regardless of their affiliations, may be invited to attend the memorial’s inauguration.
