The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is going to build a new water tunnel to improve the water supply in central and eastern suburban areas. The project includes the construction of an 8.48-kilometre tunnel between Dharavi and Ghatkopar. The BMC has awarded Welspun Enterprises the contract for this project.

The tunnel is expected to be completed in 93 months at the cost of INR 1,989 crore. Civic authorities issued the work order for the project on September 30. The contract includes the design and construction of two deep shafts at the Ghatkopar and Dharavi wastewater treatment facilities.

The tunnel will be built 145 to 150 meters underground, with a maximum depth of 152 meters at Ghatkopar. This depth is necessary to prevent damage in the future if the road goes underconstruction. In contrast, traditional pipelines are only three to five meters below the surface.

The tunnel's diameter will be 2.7 meters when completed. The project will use tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for construction. This tunnel is part of a larger network of water tunnels in the city. It will eventually connect to a longer 11.61-kilometre tunnel that the BMC is constructing from Ghatkopar to Bhandup.

Once completed, Mumbai will have a total of 100 kilometres of water tunnels. The project aims to improve water supply by reducing artificial leaks and preventing water contamination. The deep tunnels will also reduce the risk of damage during future construction projects.

The BMC is also building two wastewater treatment facilities at Ghatkopar and Dharavi. The recycled water from these facilities will be conveyed through the newly built tunnels. It will carry tertiary-treated water and reinforce with in-situ concrete.

In August, the BMC finished a 9.7-kilometre water tunnel between Ghatkopar and Wadala. This increased Mumbai's underground water tunnel network to 100 kilometers. New York has the world's longest water tunnel system at 111 kilometres.

Welspun Michigan Engineers, a subsidiary of Welspun Enterprises, was also awarded an INR 24.60 crore contract for wastewater treatment in Maharashtra. Following this, Welspun Enterprises' stock price rose by 3.42% on Tuesday, October 8, and closed at 3.01% up on Wednesday, October 9.

The company’s order book has now reached INR 14,300 crore after adding the recent tunnel contract. As of June 2024, its outstanding order book was INR 12,300 crore.
