Three more unauthorised buildings were demolished on June 12, by a special squad that was established to stop the increasing amount of illegal construction in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s K (West) ward.

The constructions that violated the regulations governing Coastal Regulatory Zones (CRZs) were also the target of action last week by local authorities.

In response to the unlawful development in Shiv Gully at Vesave, Andheri (West), the Mumbai suburban collector office and officers from the Building and Factory Department of K (West) jointly took action. After several complaints regarding unauthorised development in Versova, a special team was established. In Vesave village's Shiv gully, the crew just discovered three structures that are currently being built.

A civic official stated that while two buildings were constructed on the ground plus three storeys, and remaining was one storey. Ten municipal officials, 50 workers, police officers, and employees of the Mumbai suburban collector's office's encroachment department participated in the destruction as well. In addition, three gas cutters, two electric breakers, and two poclain were utilised in the demolition of the buildings.

The sub-engineer was suspended last week by the civic authorities, and his peers and designated officials were also transferred, for not following directives from higher-ups to remove unlawful structures in Versova. After that, a special squad was established right away to stop unauthorised building within the K West ward's boundaries.

In February 2024, under a drive to demolish illegal homes, the civic body demolished several illegal houses in Govandi. Officials from the civic body claim that the BMC owns the land and that the illegal buildings were demolished to create room for the organisation's planned hostel.

With the use of bulldozers, the local government demolished the unlawful tin buildings. The occupants of these buildings, meanwhile, claimed they were left homeless because the BMC had not given them any prior notice.

In another incident in April 2024, the Bombay High Court has taken a strong exception to the BMC's peremptory demolition of 35 galas in the Bharat Coal Compound located in Kajupada, Kurla West. The civic council is required by the court's April 18 interim injunction to return the galas to their previous condition in a span of four days. But without precise measurements, BMC is without a plan on how to carry out the order.

The proprietors claim that since 1960, about 100 galas have housed engineering, fabrication, and ready-made clothing units, employing about 5,000 people. The owners said that the BMC labelled the constructions, which are on private land, "unauthorised" and demolished them, leaving thousands of workers without a job, even though they had provided documentation and the case was in court.
