The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will redevelop the Marol municipal fish market in JB Nagar. The new market will have separate sections for wholesale and retail customers. It will also include cold storage, waste recycling, parking facilities, an auditorium, and a cafeteria.

The redevelopment will cost INR 100 crore and will be funded under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. The central government’s fisheries department will also provide INR 30 crore, whereas the state fisheries department will contribute INR 20 crore. The BMC will add INR 50 crore from its fishermen's development works fund.

As per reports, the ground-breaking ceremony is expected by the end of this month. The project is estimated to take two to three years to complete. As per a report by HT, local officials and community leaders visited the market’s site in the K-East ward on August 8.

Senior BMC officials, representatives from the Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), members of the Marol Bazar Fish Seller Koli Mahila Sansthan, officials from the fisheries department, the market department, and the K-East ward were also present during the visit.

The market’s design will be based on the Waterfront Market in Dubai. It will support local farmers, butchers, vegetable sellers, and dry goods vendors. As per sources, the INR 50 crore market allocation has already been approved by the state-level sanction and control committee for the 2024–25 action plan.

The new market will serve people from the western suburbs. It will have a ground-floor wholesale and retail fish market. A basement parking structure will also be part of the plan. The first floor will house the Koli Bhavan, with an auditorium, training facilities, and a canteen.

The market will be built as a green, energy-efficient facility. It will produce power from animal waste. Security measures will include CCTV cameras in the market for safety.
