The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to take strict action against those who violate the rules of putting up nameplates in Marathi language, Devanagari script in bold letters on shops and establishments. Businessmen without a Marathi board will now have to pay double property tax.
After a review meeting on Monday, Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani ordered strict action against those who refused to put up Marathi nameplates. According to the petition filed in the Supreme Court, the two-month period given to display the nameplates of shops and establishments in Devanagari script in bold letters expired on November 25, 2023. Thereafter, the civic body started the inspection from November 28, 2023. As on March 31, 84,007 out of 87,047 shops and establishments (96.50 per cent) were found to have put up nameplates in Marathi. Legal notices have been issued to the remaining 3,040 establishments.

A total of 1,928 cases have been filed in the court regarding Marathi boards and 177 businessmen have been fined INR 13.94 lakh. 1,751 cases are pending hearing. 343 cases out of 916 which came for hearing before the municipal administration have been resolved. A fine of INR 31.86 lakh has been recovered from it. Deputy Commissioner Kiran Dighavkar said that the administrative proceedings for hearing the remaining 573 cases are underway.
License of published boards will be revoked
If there is no name board in Marathi, the license issued for the illuminated board (glow sign board) will also be canceled immediately. If this license is revoked, the relevant establishment owners may have to bear a fine of INR 25 thousand to INR 1.5 lakh.
