The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started the repair work of four subways and two flyovers along the Western Express Highway (WEH). The proposal has received administrative approval ahead of the code of conduct for the upcoming state assembly elections. For this, the civic body has earmarked INR 14.73 crores.
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) handed over Eastern Express Highway and Western Express Highway (WEH) to BMC in 2022. In March 2023, the municipality appointed Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) to conduct the audit.
A consultant was appointed to survey 44 flyovers, underpasses and bridges on WEH. Six of these bridges require urgent inspection and maintenance. The lowest bidder was M/s H.M.V Associates, who quoted 27 per cent less than BMC's estimated rate. The work is expected to be completed in 12 months including monsoon.
"Based on the VJTI report, a detailed structural audit of each bridge was conducted and estimates of necessary repairs were prepared. Bridges identified for repairs have been prioritized for maintenance. They are now at various stages of implementation," said a municipal official.
BMC has already awarded contracts for the repair of 51 bridges from Andheri to Malad and 42 bridges from Ghatkopar to Mulund.
