The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been conducting several cleanliness drives on highways, hospitals and railway stations since the beginning of this month. In addition to the highways, it also covers ramps, service roads, and nearby areas.

In the latest development, BMC has initiated a cleanup drive on Mumbai’s Western Express Highway (WEH) and Eastern Express Highway (EEH) to improve traffic flow and cleanliness. The drive started on March 18 and will last till March 22.

The drive will take place overnight from 10 pm to 6 am. The campaign began at Bandra on the WEH and Sion on the EEH. BMC teams are using various machines to remove encroachments, clear abandoned vehicles, and clean roads.

On the first night, 16.3 km of roads were cleaned. This included 8.8 km on the EEH, covering M-West, N, and L wards, and 7.8 km on the WEH, covering H-East and K-East wards. The operation used 16 mechanical machines, including sweepers, litter pickers, misting machines, dumpers, and water tankers.

The civic crew gathered and disposed of 9.5 tonnes of waste items and 25 tonnes of debris from the Western Express Highway (WEH) and Eastern Express Highway (EEH) on the first day of the special drive.

The following work was done on the first day:

- Workers removed debris, trash, and illegal hoardings.

- They cleaned and painted road signs, intersection markers, and directional signs.

- Public trash bins were also cleaned and repaired. Seating at bus stops was also improved.

- Workers painted tree trunks, removed obstructions near plants, and maintained public restrooms.

- Abandoned vehicles blocking roads were taken away.

- Road dividers were painted and repaired. Paver blocks were removed where necessary.

- Jetting and pressure-washing machines were used for deep cleaning.

- They also removed the unauthorised hoardings and the advertisement boards on the WEH and EEH.

Different areas are scheduled for cleaning on specific days:

- March 18: 90-foot road connecting Andheri to Kandivali and Ghatkopar to Vikhroli.

- March 19: the 90-foot road from Kandivali to Dahisar Check Naka and the Vikhroli to Mulund Check Naka route.

- March 20: Bandra to Andheri and Sion to Ghatkopar.

- March 21: a 90-foot road connecting Andheri to Kandivali and Ghatkopar to Vikhroli.

- March 22: the 90-foot road from Kandivali to Dahisar Check Naka and the Vikhroli to Mulund Check Naka route.

On Tuesday, March 18, the BMC's F North ward was reported to start a collaborative drive with Solid Waste Management, License, Encroachment Removal, Building Proposals, Health, and Water Supply. The objective was to improve commuters' accessibility, safety, and general convenience by clearing the areas surrounding train stations.

Earlier, another special cleanliness drive was started by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on March 3. So far, the special hospital drive has been conducted ten times between March 3 to March 17. This drive was carried out in more than 44 hospitals, including government, municipal, and private facilities.

The operation was executed by around more than 1000 employees and workers, supported by tens of machines.
