Following the detection of bird flu among chickens at Thane Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre’s official residence in the Bara Bungalow area, the Thane Municipal Corporation has ordered the closure of chicken and mutton shops in Kopri until February 5. The decision, based on directives from the Thane District Collector, aims to curb the spread of the infection.

Last week, 20 chickens at the Commissioner’s residence were confirmed to have bird flu. In response, the district animal conservation department culled all chickens within a one-kilometer radius and implemented a bird flu prevention plan. A task force, led by the Deputy Commissioner of the Animal Husbandry Department, was formed, involving the state Animal Husbandry Department, Thane Municipal Veterinary Department, and Public Health Department. They conducted health checks on 127 residents and collected 75 swab samples, none of which showed signs of infection.

As a precaution, the District Collector ordered all chicken and egg shops in the Kopri area to shut down temporarily. Notices were issued by the Thane Municipal Corporation, confirmed by Municipal Chief Health Officer Dr. Chetna Nitil K. However, shopkeepers have expressed concern over financial losses and difficulties in covering rent due to the closure.
