A woman lost her life after a tree fell on her in Ghatkopar East. Most importantly, this kind of incident has happened before the monsoon season. The fallen tree was 50 years old. It came to a notice that the tree was not pruned despite the notice of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The incident took place at 6.01 pm near Lavender Bow Hotel on 90ft Road. Meenakshi Shah, 72, and her friend Vandana Shah, 56, were taking an evening stroll in the Garodia Nagar Welfare Federation's Manoranshan Maidan (RG) plot.
A peepal tree in the neighbouring Kailas Niwas CHS plot fell on the woman's head. Both were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital where Meenakshi was declared brought dead. Her body was sent for postmortem. Vandana has suffered a head injury and has been sent for an MRI scan.
A tree officer from N ward confirmed to HT that a pimpal tree had fallen on the RG plot of Garodia Nagar Welfare Federation. The tree officer added that the BMC had issued a notice to the society for pruning in April 2024, which was ignored.
A case has been registered against Kailas Niwas Society alleging negligence. Further action will be initiated by Ghatkopar police.
