On Monday, Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar laid the foundation for Hancock bridge, which will be constructed by civil engineers. According to the officials, the bridge, connecting Mazgaon and Umerkahdi areas, would be completed in 19 months and would cost ₹52 Cr to build.
However, Congress corporator Sonam Jatsutkar and Nikita Nikam boycotted the foundation ceremony citing that they were not informed about the same and they received the invitation 12 hours prior to the scheduled event. Hence, they decided to launch the foundation ceremony of the Hancock Bridge for the second time on Tuesday.
However, Shiv Sena’s leader Yashwant Jadhav said that invitation cards had names of the said corporators but still they chose to boycott the event.
Sena leader Yashwant Jadhav deliberately pressurised officials to not invite us. For the last two days, Jadhav was preparing for the event but when we inquired about the same, he said he does not know anything about it. But the moment we started talking about rules and laws, they put our names on the invitation cards and so we decided to boycott the event. Now, we will launch the foundation ceremony on Tuesday,” Sonam Jamsutkar, Corporator, Congress.
The 136-year-old Hancock Bridge was dismantled in November 2016 because its low height was creating problems during the conversion of Central Railways electric traction from Direct Current to Alternating Current, confirmed officials.
