In a significant development, nearly 25 per cent work of the underground subway linking Mantralaya to the upcoming Vidhan Bhavan metro station is completed, said Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) official. It is likely to be operational by June 2025.
The 306-long meters tunnel aims to facilitate smooth movement for government employees between key administrative buildings.
This new tunnel will link the Vidhan Bhavan station with the Mantralaya building and the upcoming administrative building of Vidhan Bhavan.
“All the secant pile work has been completed. Excavation work below Madam Cama Road and base RCC slab work are currently in progress,” the official said.
The construction, with an estimated cost of INR 99.80 crore, is being executed within the high-security zones of the state secretariat and Vidhan Bhavan.
As outlined in the project plan, the subway will feature a restricted passage exclusively for government employees, enabling them to move easily between the buildings.
With direct connectivity, employees will not need to travel on main roads, helping reduce road congestion. They will be relieved from the inconvenience of long commutes, improving access to work.
Additionally, a separate passage will be constructed for the general public visiting these offices, allowing them easy access to the nearest Metro 3 station.
The work of the subway is underway using the New Australian Tunnel method.
The second phase of Metro 3 line from BKC to Cuffe Parade will be put into service by June. Therefore, MMRC is trying to complete the work of this underground passage before the monsoon and start it along with the second phase of Metro 3.
