The Environment Department has approved the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) proposal to put up advertisement boards in the area near the coastal road route. Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has given approval for these billboards. Last year, the Shiv Sena (Thackeray faction) had opposed the installation of billboards in the coastal road. In order to increase the revenue of the Municipal Corporation, the Licensing Department of the Municipality had invited tenders for putting up advertisement boards in Bhulabai Desai Marg area in March 2024. The municipal administration had submitted a proposal for MCZMA's permission for those boards. MCZMA has given no objection certificate for these billboards.

MCZMA has given permission to put up billboards near Tata Garden, Amazon Garden and Lala Lajpatrai Garden. It has been clarified that these boards are not allowed to be installed in the park. MCZMA has clarified that the structural stability of the board must be strictly followed by the BMC while installing it. The civic body has predicted a large amount of revenue from these advertisement boards. It is estimated that more than one crore rupees per month will be collected by the municipal corporation from advertisement boards at three places.

Last year, the Shiv Sena (Thackeray) party protested against the municipal corporation's decision to install billboards along the coastal road. While deciding to put up the boards at three places, the Municipal Corporation had issued a tender for it. But Shiv Sena MLA Aaditya Thackeray opposed it as the places chosen for the billboards are within CRZ. Placing of billboards on seashores, if permitted, may pose a threat to life and property. Also, since there is a difference in the rates of boards, there are financial irregularities in this tender and Thackeray demanded immediate cancellation of these contracts and an inquiry. The proposal was sent to MCZMA for approval.
