The relocation of the 90-meter-high girder on the southern side of the Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge was completed on September 8, 2024. The girder will now be brought down to 8 meters from its current height of 90 meters. It is a major progress on the flyover that connects the western and eastern sides of Andheri.

On September 4, 2024, the girder on the railway section was lifted to a height of 25 meters. By September 9, 2024, it was lifted 65 meters more. The procedures were overseen by Bhushan Gagrani, Commissioner and Administrator of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The beam installation reportedly faced many challenges. This included train traffic and power interruptions, but these were resolved before completion. The project is managed by M/s RITES Limited, and the design has been approved by the Western Railway (WR) Authority.

The next task is to lower the southern iron beam, currently positioned 14 to 15 meters above ground, to the east side of the railway track. Once the beam is lowered to 8 meters, it will rest on RCC columns.

This is the first instance in India where a beam is being lowered during bridge construction. Other tasks, such as lane markings, streetlights, and road surface improvements, will be carried out after the beam is in place.

The civic body issued a statement updating that construction will continue with the approval of the WR. The BMC is working together with Western Railway on the project.

The bridge's first phase is already completed and was opened to traffic on February 26, 2024. Currently, the focus is on installing the second beam of the project. The second phase of might be completed by November 14, 2024.
