Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who assumed leadership of the ministry, outlined his plan to turn the state's transport networks into successful, well-run businesses while speaking in the Mantralaya in south Mumbai on Tuesday, December 24.
In his address to media, Sarnaik underlined the importance of giving road and air travel top priority in order to establish Maharashtra as a pioneer in these fields.
He intends to institute a number of people-friendly measures as part of his initial plans, such as travel subsidies for women and senior residents.
On microblogging site X the minister posted, “Interacted with the media at Mantralaya and shared details about the significant decisions taken today regarding the Transport Department of Maharashtra.”
In his post he mentioned that Eknath Shinde, Chief Leader of Shiv Sena, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has entrusted him with this responsibility. His top priority is to do justice to this responsibility.
He posted on social media, “A strategic decision to make all transfers in the State Transport (ST) Corporation online was taken during the meeting. The ST Corporation is currently facing significant losses, and this important decision aims to bring it back on track. Implementation of this decision will begin within this week.”
Speaking about efficiency of ST Corporation he said, “There is a need to bring more efficiency to the ST Corporation. If tough decisions are required to ensure that ST services reach each and every comer of the state effectively, I am ready to take such a stand.”
Further he mentioned, “I consider Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, my idol in development matters. Along with road transport, we must prioritize aerial guided transport, similar to the ropeway transportation that has been launched in Bangalore. Introducing 15-16 seater buses via ropeway in the MMR region could reduce road traffic congestion. I will work towards establishing such a transport system in our state.”
His plan to introduce 15–16-seater cable cars in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), based on Bangalore's ropeway transit system, is one of the most ambitious.
The minister presented plans to update the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus depots in addition to the cable vehicle system, drawing inspiration from comparable establishments in Gujarat.
Sarnaik also expressed his intention to implement effective strategies from other states while praising Karnataka's sophisticated passenger services.
There are also plans to improve air transport services in an effort to make Maharashtra the leading state in this area.
Sarnaik promised to make difficult choices and carry out these projects gradually in order to improve MSRTC operations.
